Description:
In 1884, Henry Royce started an electrical and mechanical business. He made his first car, a two-cylinder Royce 10, in his Manchester factory in 1904, and was introduced to Charles Rolls at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 4 May of that year. Rolls was proprietor of an early motor car dealership, C.S.Rolls & Co. in Fulham. The partnership that followed has transcended business and become iconic.
Initially, the Silver Shadow was planned to be called “Silver Mist”, a natural progression from its predecessor Silver Cloud. The name was changed to “Silver Shadow” after realizing that “mist” is the German word for manure, rubbish, or dirt.
The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Both powerplants were coupled to a General Motors-sourced Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission, except on pre-1970 right-hand-drive models, which used the same 4-speed automatic gearbox as the Silver Cloud (also sourced from GM).
This black-on-black Silver Shadow is straight and clean. It has the proper patina for its age, yet looks like a car much younger than its years. It starts right up and runs and drives smoothly. The tires on the car in good condition. The headliner shows no rips, however the seats and carpets do show normal levels of wear and tear that one would expect from a 43-year-old automobile. The paint is quite nice, and the car shows no evidence of rust. The car appears to be accident-free due to the tight panel fit and straight body. All stock and original under the hood.
New fuel pump. Recent tuning and service. Minor typo in Washington State title which is correctable if required. Lovely color of Mason’s Black on an early Shadow which retains the chrome and lighter feel that was lost to the big rubber bumper and higher stance with the later cars.
